There was
pandemonium at Bangi village in Mariga local government area of Niger
state when some irate youths numbering about ten invaded the Butchi police
station in the area, killing two suspects while some other suspected
armed robbers escaped from the police cell.
Their mission to
the police post it was gathered, was to carry out jungle justice on some
suspected robbers who have engaged in the constant theft of motorcycles from
their owners in the past few weeks in the area thereby denying them of their
livelihood.
However, they met
a stone wall on getting to the police post as the men and officers on duty
restricted their movement towards getting close to the station to carry out
their task. The angry youths who were said to have reinforced later,
overpowered the police on duty, damaged the doors and windows and forced their
way into the cell where some of the suspects escaped.
Two of the
suspected “motorcycle thieves” were however unlucky as the irate youths descended
on them and killed them instantly in their cells.
The third suspect
it was gathered, was however rescued by the Divisional Police officer who
quickly ferried him out of the station to Kontagora Area Commanders office for
protection.
Contacted, the
state police command spokesman, ASP Richard Oguche who confirmed the story said
police are now trailing those youths involved in the mob and promised that they
will be brought to book. He said besides killing two of the suspects, some
other suspects escaped while properties worth millions of naira were also
destroyed at the police station.
Meanwhile, five of
the irate youths have been arrested while police are still hunting for
others involved in the dastardly act. Police said they will be charged to
court for culpable homicide and damaging
government properties after there preliminary investigations.
