IMSU, ABSU and some other universities to be closed down by NUC



The joint task team of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission and National Universities Commission said they have commenced a nationwide operation to seal off identified illegal universities.


The chairman of the task team, Professor Olu Aina, who said this on Wednesday at an ICPC/NUC joint press conference held at the ICPC headquarters, said the operation is targeted at seizing property, making arrests, and prosecuting those found involved in the operation of illegal universities.


“These unaccredited institutions, apart from extorting huge sums of money from unsuspecting Nigerians, are manned by unqualified personnel; and operate in makeshift structures and poor environment that cannot qualify our youth both in learning and character for the award of recognized university degrees. Students of there institutions are not admitted through JAMB, neither are they qualified or considered for the NYSC,” he said.


The team released the names of 41 out of 61 illegal universities across the country and their addresses, some of which included Concept College London, Abuja campus located in Gwarimpa, Imo State University, Temple University Nazarene Children Academy, Karu, Abia State University, Abia, Irish University Business School London, Benue State, Houdegbe North America University, Airport road Kano, and Pilgrims University, Aba  


In its Abuja operation, the team arrested one Richard Ajasha, who is the secretary at Gwarjo Close, off Gimbiya Street, who was serving as secretary for one of the illegal university under the name of “Imo State University Outreach Center”.
